She had been scheduled to make her maiden voyage in 1940, but World War II prevented the sailing to be made. During hostilities she was sunk in the Dutch harbor three times by different methods, so as to keep the ship from being used. The second and third time by Dutch Underground, so to prevent use by Germany. After the war she was completed and placed in service, arriving in New York on July 8, 1946.
